YOU’LL NEVER HAVE A CHANCE LIKE THIS AGAIN!!!!
Except, you will. Because the thing that created this opportunity in the first place? It wasn’t random chance or “luck”.
5 or 6 years ago, I nearly ruined my marriage because I wanted to take a “once in a lifetime” job opportunity.
I was working for a consulting company and we were bidding on a project. It was going to be amazing. We had an outside consultant on our team, helping us bid the project. I knew how much I would learn from him, form the project, and from the team that we were putting together. It was going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity for me and my career! It was going to be the BEST JOB EVAR!!!
Except it wasn’t going to be. I knew it wasn’t. I knew it was going to be stressful. It was going to be long hours. It was going to be 2.5 hours away from my wife and my son. It was going to be for a difficult client with a difficult project. It was going to be working with a mentor that had a reputation for being very hard to work for, in spite of (because of?) his knowledge of process and his demand for perfection.
“BUT IT’S A ONCE IN A LIFETIME CHANCE!”
I kept telling myself this. I convinced myself of this, because it was the first time I had ever been given an opportunity like this. It was nearly everything I was looking for. Never mind all the bad things I also saw with it. It had the things I wanted and I convinced myself that it was the only time I would ever have the chance to work on a project like this.
Then one day my wife broke down crying. The realization of what it was going to do to my marriage and family life hit me hard at that point. I told my boss to take me off the project team, even if we were awarded the contract.
I’m glad I didn’t take the job.
No, It Is Not A “Once In A Lifetime Chance”
Sometimes it looks like it will be… because after all, that kind of opportunity has never presented itself before, has it?
But the truth is, this “once in a lifetime opportunity” isn’t. This is simply the first time that an opportunity like this has presented itself. And I can tell you, with a great level of certainty, that you will have another opportunity like this again – and probably a better one.
You Created That Opportunity Once, You’ll Do It Again
It’s called opportunity, not luck.
Opportunity happens when you are in the right place, at the right time, with the right skills, knowledge and experience.
People don’t walk up to random strangers and offer them investment opportunities, or amazing jobs… unless the one making the offer is a scammer. Opportunities present themselves because you have the knowledge, skills and experience to get things done.
That doesn’t sound like luck to me. That sounds like hard work. That sounds like paying your dues, putting in the effort and creating the circumstances in which opportunities will present themselves. It sounds like you created the circumstances that allowed this opportunity to present itself to you.
It wasn’t luck. It was you.
And if it happened once, it will happen again.
Taking The Once In A Lifetime Opportunity, Dozens Of Times
In the however-many-years since I was given that “once in a lifetime” job opportunity, I’ve worked on dozens of contracts that had all of the things I wanted from that contract. I’ve done TDD with Agile and Lean. I’ve had amazing mentors that taught me a lot. I’ve pushed boundaries, moved people and teams and projects forward.
I’ve had the “once in a lifetime opportunity” multiple times, now. And I know that you will, too. Because the truth is, you are creating the circumstances in which opportunity presents itself.
